What is Vagabond?
It’s a manga based on history, depicting the life of the master swordsman Miyamoto Musashi⚔️.
The story is based on Eiji Yoshikawa’s novel “Musashi“📖.
Drawn entirely with a brush, the overwhelming artwork makes it a true masterpiece🎨✨.
What is the current status?
It’s been running since 1998, but it remains unfinished and has been on a long hiatus for a while now⏸️.
Why won’t it finish?
Inoue-sensei is actually quite active, working on movies and creating a basketball manga called REAL🎬🏀.
However, it seems he isn’t in the right mindset to draw Vagabond at the moment😢.
If you look at REAL, which he is currently serializing, you can tell that Vagabond requires a much higher “artistic cost” (time and effort) to draw compared to REAL, so it’s undecided if it will ever actually be completed🖌️🔥.
Should I read the original novel?
The original novel is by a very famous Japanese author📚.
However, it seems Inoue-sensei has added his own unique arrangements and twists to the manga version.
I want to read the final chapter! A glimmer of hope! You could actually read the storyboard for the “phantom” final chapter at a museum!
Actually, at an exhibition called “Inoue Takehiko: The Last Manga Exhibition,” the concept for the ending was revealed exclusively!
If they ever hold that exhibition again, you might have a chance to see it.
It seems the story flow goes something like this👇:
In his old age, on the verge of death, Musashi has flashbacks of his life:
Jotaro → Past rivals → Otsu → His mother → Kojiro →
Then, a scene where a young Musashi and young Kojiro are playing innocently.
They say “Let’s go!” and head off to the other world together.
Apparently, this is also included in the official catalog for The Last Manga Exhibition, so if you can get your hands on that book, you might be able to read it📘✨.
