What is the new Japanese buzzword, “Jinin Reze(自認レゼ)” (Reze Kinnie)? 🔥
It seems the Chainsaw Man movie is a huge hit. 🎬
Recently, while walking around town, I heard some high school girls jokingly saying things like, “I might be a ‘Jinin Reze’.”
I realized the word has spread that much, so I decided to pick up this topic. 👀
What is “Jinin Reze”?
It refers to women who project themselves onto “Reze,” a character from the popular manga and anime Chainsaw Man.
It is often used as a criticism or mockery meaning, “She mistakenly thinks she is a special existence like Reze” or “Objectively speaking, she has fallen into painful (cringe) narcissism.” 😣
Why do women project themselves onto Reze?
Reze gets close to the protagonist, Denji, but she is actually a Soviet spy. 🕵️♀️
And while she looks like an innocent and naive girl at first glance, her true form is the Bomb Devil with terrifying combat abilities. 💥
She represents a “strong woman” who will choose any means necessary for her goal, and as a Soviet spy, she has a secret past she can’t tell anyone. 🔫
The part that says, “She is actually a capable woman, but she holds a secret she can’t say and is hurting inside…” is what attracts female readers.
“I’m capable and super strong, but people don’t realize it… I have deep wounds in my heart… This is literally me!”
She has the kind of charm that makes people think this and get obsessed with the character.
What kind of behavior does a “Jinin Reze” exhibit?
I think projecting oneself onto a character is something anyone does.
However, I will explain why this became such a hot topic in Japan that the specific term “Jinin Reze” was born.
The problem is that Reze’s clothes and hairstyle are easy to copy, and so-called “cringe girls” (itai joshi) sporting Reze’s hair and outfit were seen all over SNS. 📱
If you have black hair, put your bangs between your eyes, and tie your hair back, voilà! You have Reze hair!
For clothes, you just need a choker and a white top.
It’s easy to copy and upload to SNS… This is the downside of social media. 📱
Pattern 2 of “Jinin Reze”
Another reason “Jinin Reze” became so mocked is that people started using copyrighted characters as their own avatars (proxies) in self-projection or essay-style manga. 📚
They expose their shallow understanding of the work in their fan creations, or their behavior is so “Out Of Character” (OOC) for the character they claim to identify with, that it draws backlash. 😵💫
Summary
Even if you want to wear a black choker and Reze-style hair for fashion, it might be better to stop for now. ⛔
Right now, that outfit risks getting you branded with the label of “lame person.”
