Have you heard of the new Japanese buzzword, “Chikuzenni Woman(筑前煮女Chikuzenni Onna)”? 🍲👩🦰
To explain it simply…
Chikuzenni is a Japanese dish. Because it takes a lot of effort and uses many vegetables and root crops, it is a symbol of “elaborate home cooking” and “the taste of mom’s cooking” (Ofukuro no aji) 👵🥕🍠.
Basically, a “Chikuzenni Woman” (筑前煮女Chikuzenni Onna) is a woman who excessively shows off her domestic skills and tries way too hard to appeal to men 💘.
She is the type of woman that other women hate 😨.
Let’s look at how to make Chikuzenni 👩🍳
You need various ingredients like green beans, lotus root, carrots, etc. 🥕.
It takes money, and it takes time to cut all the ingredients ⏰💸.
Furthermore, since it’s mostly root vegetables, you have to simmer it slowly for a long time.
On top of that, the seasoning is delicate, so unless you are a really good cook, it’s a Japanese dish that doesn’t turn out delicious.
Just so you know, as a Japanese person, I have almost never thought Chikuzenni was delicious 😅.
To be precise, I’ve never thought homemade Chikuzenni was delicious.
The Japanese drama that sparked the “Chikuzenni Woman” meme 📺
The source is a Japanese drama called Rikokatsu.
The heroine’s rival, Ichinose (female), appears as a colleague of Koichi (male) at his workplace, and she secretly has feelings for him 💘.
She believes that she is more suitable for Koichi as a Self-Defense Force officer’s wife, so she makes Chikuzenni, puts it in a Tupperware container, and brings it to him to make her move.
By the way, Koichi is married to the heroine 🔥 (though they are on the verge of divorce) 💔.
Why do we use such slang for a woman who just cooked an elaborate dish? 🤔
It is common for modern Japanese women to work full-time, so we have to cook in what little time we have 💼🏃♀️🍳.
In a situation like this, if someone told us to make slow-simmered Chikuzenni, we’d lose our minds 😵💫.
And the main point is: it’s not even that delicious considering the amount of effort it takes!
Just like in Rikokatsu, a woman who makes Chikuzenni has gotten the image of being a “slightly off” or out-of-touch, old-fashioned Japanese woman 🎎.
Introducing places where you can easily eat Chikuzenni 🍽️
It is sold quite often in Japanese supermarkets 🛒.
I think there is about a 60% chance they sell it. However, as I mentioned above, Chikuzenni requires a lot of effort and ingredients, so I think supermarkets might stop stocking it as much in the future.
Also, supermarket Chikuzenni usually tastes bad 😢.
Eat it at a “Kappo” or “Kaiseki” restaurant 🍱.
The Chikuzenni at restaurants is usually delicious 😋. I wrote above that Chikuzenni tastes bad, but the Chikuzenni made by pros is actually good ✨.
If it comes out as a small side dish (Kobachi) in a Kaiseki course, please pay attention and give it a try 👀.
